“When I meet people, I feel like everyone is focused on me, and I want to leave the place.”
What is Social Anxiety (Social Phobia)?
This problem is observed more significantly among youth and adolescents.
For instance, a student in school or university might say, “If the teacher asks me to answer, I know the answer, but I don’t respond or I answer incorrectly.”
When at a social event, a person with social phobia feels anxious, their face turns red, they experience shortness of breath, their heart rate is fast, and they want to leave the place. This is because they think people are constantly focusing on them, and if they make a mistake, they’ll look bad and people will form a negative opinion of them. That’s why they prefer not to interact with anyone to avoid criticism.
If they have a request or need something, they won’t ask and will sacrifice what they want.
Young men, in their relationships with girls, are afraid of rejection, which is why they don’t get to know them.
Stuttering: When someone stands in front of their manager or teacher and stutters, this is also a sign of social phobia or social shyness.
All these manifestations indicate the problem of social phobia (shyness).
Treatment
- Medication for anxiety.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) sessions to treat the phobia.
- Training in relaxation exercises.
- Increasing self-confidence.
